How to Read Live NFL Scores: A Quick Guide for New Fans
A concise explanation of what you see on a live NFL scoreboard, from quarter indicators and game clocks to the scoring plays that move the numbers.
An NFL scoreboard packs a lot of information into a small space. Understanding what each element means lets you check a score on your phone and instantly know the state of the game.
The quarter indicator
NFL games have four 15-minute quarters labeled Q1 through Q4. When you see Q2 12:34, the game is in the second quarter with 12 minutes and 34 seconds remaining. HT means halftime, and OT means overtime.
Score increments
- Touchdown + extra point = 7 points (the most common scoring sequence).
- Touchdown + two-point conversion = 8 points.
- Field goal = 3 points.
- Safety = 2 points (rare, scored by the defense).
Final score labels
A finished game shows Final or Final/OT. Final/OT means the game went to overtime. In the regular season, NFL overtime is a single 10-minute period that can end in a tie if neither team scores.
